Ending the Climate Silence

We no longer have decades to curb our emissions and reduce global warming. We’ve known of the effects of climate change and the impending consequences of ignoring it for decades. The scientific community has been screaming about this for some time now. Yet consistently it has remained out of the mainstream public and political discourse. Plans to address it are deemed radical. Young people who are concerned with the environment are declared to be puppets of an overall socialist agenda. Prominent figures who speak of the issue with any urgency are called alarmists. On and on it goes. The reactions to concern about the climate crisis have created climate silence. Most politicians, journalists, news anchors, and public figures remain silent on the issue of climate change in fear of the reactions described above.

Even when environmental disasters like floods and forest fires are coupled with scientific evidence of rising temperatures, people are weary to lay the blame at the feet of human-caused climate change. This weariness, this lack of will, upholding of ignorance, and silence, is climate silence. Climate silence has not only negative effects on the fight against climate change but also on what human life will look like as a result of climate change.

If we remain silent and inactive, the consequences of the climate crisis will be exponentially worse. Naveco Power recognizes the severity of the climate emergency and listens to science and the facts given to us by reports like those of the IPCC. Naveco looks to better the environment and our future while providing economic benefits to New Brunswickers.

Climate silence reaches us here in Canada. It is an injustice. When forest fires decimated Fort McMurray, Alberta, we experienced climate silence. When floods hit record levels in Fredericton, New Brunswick for consecutive years, we experienced climate silence. The ice in the North is receding more every year, with catastrophic effects on migratory arctic wildlife, and we experience climate silence on this issue too. From coast to coast to coast, Canada experiences and suffers the damaging effects of climate silence. All the issues above are related to the ongoing climate crisis, global warming, and environmental ignorance.

Often the events above are not discussed as part of the climate crisis due to the economic benefits from the industries and power structures that benefit from their causes. The media and politicians have long been silent on the environmental causes and effects of these events and are therefore examples of systemic climate silence. Climate silence is well and truly alive here in Canada.

Further to this, in October, 2018, the scientists of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a landmark report, warning that humanity had a mere 12 years to radically slash greenhouse-gas emissions or face a calamitous future in which hundreds of millions of people worldwide would go hungry or homeless or worse. Only 22 of the 50 biggest newspapers in the United States covered that report.

Not only have the symptoms of the environmental crisis been ignored as being caused by global warming, but the explicit warnings of the world’s scientists have also been ignored. This too is climate silence. Our best scientists tell us insistently that a calamity is unfolding, that the life-support systems of the Earth are being damaged in ways that threaten our survival. Yet in the face of these facts, we carry on as usual.

At Naveco Power, we are not carrying on as usual. We understand and appreciate the facts surrounding the climate crisis. We are working to mitigate the environmental impact that we have, through renewable energy projects and building retrofits. We hear the scientists, concerned citizens, and see the disasters spurred on by global warming. We are running out of time to mitigate the effects of global warming, and we carry that urgency into our efforts as a company. This is done through our efforts as a company, along with efforts in policy advocacy, and shifts in the routines of our staff. We acknowledge the severity of climate silence in our world and community and remain committed to our work and not remaining silent on the environmental crisis we all currently face. If you would like to help us with this effort, please contact us today to see how we can help you help our environment for a better tomorrow.
