PV Panels: Past, Present, and Future

Energy production has come a long way since the first caveman-assembled fire. Not only have we found a much easier way to do this, we are constantly discovering methods that are better than the last. Over the years, we have continued to make technological advances, such as the creation of solar PV panels. We now have ways to satisfy our own needs, while not compromising the present or future needs of others. This has created more and more incentives for society to adopt renewable energy. Who Invented Solar Energy?

Technically, no one “invented” solar energy. The ability to harness energy from the sun and use it as a source of fuel emerged with the first photosynthetic being. But are we suggesting that your house is a giant plant? Of course not. In terms of who discovered solar energy and made it accessible to humans, there are various scientists to give credit to.

What is now known as the photovoltaic effect was discovered by Edmond Becquerel in 1839. The photovoltaic effect generates voltage (or electric current) in a photovoltaic cell when it is exposed to sunlight. It is this effect that makes solar panels useful, as it is how the cells within the panel convert sunlight to electrical energy. This is the scientific process that is responsible for solar PV panels, one of the two types of modern solar energy.  

Following that, Willoughby Smith determined that selenium could be used as a photoconductor. Then, in 1876, William Grylls Adams and Richard Evans Day connected the dots to use selenium to exhibit the photovoltaic effect, and Charles Fritz took it a step further by using this information to create the first selenium solar panel in 1883.

In fact, Canada ranked 9th on the global scale in 2018 for its solar PV usage. While these statistics are a great indication of this industry’s growth, we still have a long way to go. More and more people are jumping on board, realizing the growth in this market, and the savings it can provide for their businesses and homes.
